SAN FRANCISCO — Private equity firms are eager to put to work some of the hoards of cash they’ve been sitting on while the economy was on life support, and law firms in California are lining up for a piece of the action.

With its addition of partner Scott Joachim from Perkins Coie, San Francisco’s Fenwick & West is the latest indigenous firm moving on ambitions to build a West Coast private equity presence. Out-of-state firms are jockeying for position, too. Ropes & Gray, with headquarters in equity-rich Boston, has moved two more lawyers to San Francisco to bring its private equity team here to 10. Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld are also keen on gaining ground with more private equity funds.
