SAN FRANCISCO — Personal injury and workers’ compensation attorneys often have a thorny relationship — but one firm has discovered a way to ease the prickliness and boost its profits at the same time.

The Veen Firm in San Francisco has paid out millions on building a formal referral network with workers’ comp and other specialty shops across California, and the initiative has proved so successful the personal injury firm has redoubled its efforts in the past year. The result, lawyers say, is more trust and better referrals for both camps.
