SACRAMENTO — The state Supreme Court has decided to dabble in California’s redistricting process, unanimously asking Friday for additional briefing on how it should respond to a possible referendum on new Senate maps.

The GOP-backed Fairness & Accountability in Redistricting, or FAIR, has submitted 711,000 signatures to qualify a November 2012 referendum on the new state Senate lines. Elections officials are still counting names and will be for weeks, maybe months. But FAIR insists it has enough signatures. And it wants the high court to block the new Senate lines before candidates start filing to run.
