SAN FRANCISCO — Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, a business law firm with roots in Winston-Salem and offices across the mid-Atlantic and Southeast, is opening its first branch on the West Coast over the weekend.

Lawyers at the 520-attorney firm said Thursday they will populate their new Cupertino office with 13 patent prosecution attorneys and agents from various firms, along with Atlanta partners John “Sandy” Smith and James Vaughan, who will make regular visits. The firm declined to disclose names of new recruits until Saturday.
