Here’s the old scenario. Attorney Jane Doe checks her watch to make sure the library reference desk is still open. She walks up one floor to the library reference desk. After a pleasant moment commenting on the weather, she asks the librarian on duty for research assistance. The librarian is able to run some searches and hand-deliver results to Jane in a few hours, or perhaps the next few days.

Here’s the new scenario. Attorney Jane Doe has a long night ahead of her. It’s 6 p.m. her time in New York. Her local library staff have left for the day, but she still needs a litigation search. She forwards an email to her firm’s centralized research request system. A librarian in California starts working on her request within 15 minutes and is able to email a response (and attachments) within the next one to two hours.
