Support from law enforcement and a boost from Meg Whitman voters could make Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley the first Republican attorney general in 12 years.

A Field Poll in early July had Cooley up 37 percent to 34 percent, with 29 percent undecided. The money being spent by Whitman at the top of the ticket could tip the race, says Allan Hoffenblum, co-founder and publisher of the nonpartisan “California Target Book,” which handicaps election outcomes.
