SAN FRANCISCO — An Alameda County jury on Tuesday awarded $340,000 in economic and punitive damages to a nurse who accused her hospital of retaliating against her when she complained about patient safety problems, including an operating room employee jumping rope with an extension cord in the spine room of the hospital.

After 15 years at ValleyCare Medical Center, operating room nurse Kristeen Klaas resigned after her bosses accused her of walking off the job. Eleven days later, she asked for her job back. Top administrators at the hospital refused to rehire her.
