SAN FRANCISCO — Meeting a client at McDonald’s to pick up $15,000 in cash has landed San Francisco plaintiff lawyer Waukeen McCoy in serious trouble.
After settling part of a civil rights claim against FedEx Corp., McCoy solicited cash payments from three plaintiffs above and beyond his contractual fees, according to an order from Northern District Judge Susan Illston. McCoy engineered the payments just weeks after he promised Illston — verbally and in writing — that he would not seek additional money, Illston wrote Friday.
