Robert Raven, a former Morrison & Foerster partner who helped transform the firm into a global powerhouse and an influential champion of diversity in the legal profession, died Saturday after a long illness. He was 80. “He was one of the great law firm leaders of the last 50 years,” said O’Melveny & Myers’ Warren Christopher. Raven had been an early and vocal proponent of recruiting women and minorities, as well as of alternative dispute resolution.

The state’s judicial watchdog revealed why its members changed their minds and junked the controversial discipline case against First District Court of Appeal Justice J. Anthony Kline. In a written decision and dismissal order, the Commission on Judicial Performance pointed to a recent California Supreme Court opinion clarifying when judges can be disciplined for legal error. “I see this not as just as a victory for me but for every judge in the state,” Kline said. Kline, 61, had been charged in June 1998 with willful misconduct for a 1997 dissent in which he said he would not follow a California Supreme Court decision.
