Every year Recorder affiliate Corporate Counsel compiles lists of law firms that the nation’s largest companies hire most. And year after year, the biggest firms with the biggest brand names predictably top the list.

But one group of law firms often gets overlooked: small firms, those with fewer than 100 attorneys, that didn’t make it onto the most recent Am Law 200 survey. The reasons are many. A lot of chief legal officers for the biggest companies themselves come from the same big firms, and they hire who they know. Or, when it comes to big litigation that lasts for years, America’s biggest companies turn to the megafirms with mega-firepower and global reach.
