A committee charged with evaluating California’s notoriously difficult bar exam has recommended largely keeping the current format of the test, ending nearly two years of debate by the group over how lawyers should be licensed in the Golden State.

The 19-member Blue Ribbon Commission on the Future of the Bar Exam, appointed by the California Supreme Court and state bar, finished almost all of its work Wednesday on a 305-page report that includes recommendations, dissenting viewpoints and appendices compiled after 17 meetings and the receipt of more than 1,400 public comments.
