The first person to face criminal charges from the biggest scandal to rock the mass tort plaintiffs bar wasn’t a lawyer. But an affidavit unsealed last week made it clear that prosecutors are focused on Tom Girardi and the attorneys at his now-defunct law firm.

On Nov. 7, prosecutors charged Christopher Kamon, the former chief financial officer of Girardi Keese, with one count of wire fraud. According to an affidavit unsealed Nov. 16, Kamon who is 49, “funneled millions of dollars from the law firm’s operating accounts to bank accounts that he or his co-schemers controlled.” Kamon was arrested in Baltimore, Maryland, after purchasing a $2.4 million home in The Bahamas.
