Attorney General Merrick Garland, breaking his silence on the search of former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence, said he personally approved the decision to seek the search warrant and announced the U.S. Justice Department would seek to have the document unsealed.

Garland, speaking from the press room at Main Justice, said unsealing the warrant was appropriate given Trump’s public confirmation of the search and the “substantial public interest in the matter.” As he spoke, DOJ filed a motion in the Southern District of Florida asking a judge to unseal the warrant and a property receipt listing items that were seized, “absent objection by former President Trump.”
