The percentage of California judicial applicants who are women climbed to nearly 55% in 2021, marking the first time in recent years that the majority of those seeking bench appointments weren’t men, according to statistics released Tuesday by the governor’s office.

The percentage of women applicants outpaced their representation in the state judiciary, 39%, and their membership in the state bar, which was 42% in 2019.
