Eighteen former NBA players were indicted earlier this month for allegedly scamming the NBA Players’ Health and Welfare Benefit Plan out of $2.5 million by presenting false claims for medical and dental services that never occurred.

Federal prosecutors charged former first-round draft-pick Terrence Williams and his alleged co-conspirators with wire fraud and conspiracy to commit health-care fraud after they submitted claims for treatment they never received. The charges come just one month after three former NFL players pleaded guilty in federal court to defrauding the Gene Upshaw NFL Player Health Reimbursement Account Plan by presenting $2.9 million in false claims for reimbursement for the purchase of expensive medical equipment.
