Nair Flores, the head of intellectual property at Lyft, built the company’s IP function from scratch, grew its patent portfolio by 500 percent and supported Lyft’s largest joint development agreement to date.

Name an important opportunity you got early in your career and what you did with it.

I got a job as a patent agent during law school. That allowed me to explore early on whether or not I wanted to pursue a career in IP and learn what I liked (and didn’t). This allowed me to focus on future opportunities and gain experience.

What’s the best piece of career advice anyone ever gave you?

People and product matter the most.

No. 1 survival tip in a work crisis:

Save any rush work or email in drafts. Take a short walk and come back to it in a bit to refine.

What’s one way you’ve had to change your thinking toward practicing law to succeed in-house at a technology company?

When there is no clear law or precedence, you have to make a decision and sometimes create law. As long as you are doing the right thing (putting your users, community, and product first), it often works out.

Name a lawyer whose work you admire and why?

Sam O’Rourke.

What’s the best part about working in the tech sector?

Being involved in the newest technology. Seeing lives made better through technology is the most rewarding aspect.

What’s the biggest challenge?

Making sure we keep up with the pace of company growth.

What piece of advice do you give to lawyers considering a career in tech law?

Find an area of technology that truly interests you. You do your best work when you believe in the product or mission of the company.

What’s one way technology has made your life easier?

It allows for easier connection and communication with the people I love. Food and grocery delivery has also been a lifesaver.

One way it’s made your life more difficult?

So far, so good.

What’s one area of technology that you’re most excited about and why?

Autonomous vehicles of course!
