SAN FRANCISCO — When Davis Polk & Wardwell decided to open a Silicon Valley outpost in 1999, its intentions could be seen in the pedigree of two men, both with the last name Kelly, who helped get it going.

Daniel Kelly, the corporate partner dispatched from New York, carried with him the firm’s deep institutional relationships with investment banks. William Kelly, a former general counsel hired away from Silicon Graphics Inc., understood the Valley and the needs of companies there.
