SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge has dismissed a suit against Groupon Inc. that was filed by a Bay Area couple who claim their purchase of a $39 duct cleaning deal resulted in $40,000 of property damage.

The home-repair-gone-bad started with a Groupon.com offer for vent cleaning and inspection by a “licensed, bonded, and insured technician,” according to the 2015 suit filed by William and Frances Mosley of Santa Clara County. The technician who arrived to perform the service informed the Mosleys that their ducts were contaminated with asbestos and agreed to remove them for a separate fee of roughly $1,200.
