SAN FRANCISCO — Oakland criminal defense lawyer Erik Babcock found himself in an odd position in U.S. District Judge William Alsup’s courtroom on Wednesday afternoon: the witness stand.

Babcock was among the first defense witnesses called by his former client Luke Brugnara, a once successful real estate investor who has been defending himself at trial this past week against charges that he conned an art dealer out of valuable works, lied under oath, and escaped federal custody while awaiting trial.
