To Facebook Inc. intellectual property chief Sam O’Rourke, there was never any doubt.

Facing a patent suit over a large swath of Facebook functionality—and claims of hundreds of millions in damages—O’Rourke said he didn’t hesitate to go to trial. “In this case we did not infringe and the patents were clearly invalid,” O’Rourke said. “Under those circumstances, we are willing to go to the mat, even in situations like this where the damages ask was north of $500 million.”
