SAN FRANCISCO — UC-Hastings College of the Law slipped further down the U.S. News & World Report law school rankings, landing at No. 59, even as most other California schools jumped up a few spots from last year’s list. UC-Davis School of Law moved from No. 36 to No. 31. The state’s newest law school, UC-Irvine, made its first appearance on the list at No. 30. Santa Clara University School of Law rose from No. 107 to No. 94 and Chapman University School of Law moved up from No. 140 to No. 127. University of San Francisco reappeared on the ranked list this year at No. 138.

The report tweaked its methodology this year, according Robert Morse, U.S. News director of data research, but not in the way that a group of California deans had requested last year. In calculating employment rates—which count for 18 percent of a school’s rank—U.S. News this year began discounting jobs that are funded by the school.
