SAN FRANCISCO — Add Irell & Manella to the growing list of law firms defending Uber Technologies Inc. in proposed class actions targeting the transportation company’s business practices.

A. Matthew Ashley and Andra Greene, both partners in Irell’s Newport Beach office, entered appearances this week on behalf of Uber in a spate of suits targeting Uber’s $1 “Safe Rides Fee.” According to one lawsuit filed on Dec. 23 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Uber charges the fee and touts its “industry leading” background checks despite the fact that its “safety measures are woefully inadequate.”
