SAN FRANCISCO — Lawyers in the Northern District of California who have a concern about an individual federal judge that doesn’t quite warrant a formal misconduct complaint now have a confidential place to raise concerns.

A pair of retired judges volunteered to be the district’s first ombudspersons as a part of a program established in mid-2014. Former Northern District Judge Fern Smith and former Santa Clara Superior Court Judge James Kleinberg agreed to review attorneys’ concerns on issues such as judicial temperament, disability or delay. Attorneys can make reports by writing, emailing or calling either Smith or Kleinberg. Contact information for the retired judges is available on the program’s website.
