An endorsement of a candidate for union president by the nonprofit corporation that administers benefits for the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police was an improper use of public money and violated the group’s bylaws and articles of incorporation, the Commonwealth Court has ruled.
The lawyer for the Philadelphia police officer and union member who challenged the endorsement predicted the decision would have a broad impact, particularly on how corporations—both nonprofit and for-profit—spend money on political expenditures.
