Did some of the country’s largest egg producers slaughter healthy birds and scramble up a sham “animal welfare” program to increase cage space for hens as part of a conspiracy to jack up egg prices?

Those are just two of the juicy allegations brought by a putative class of direct egg purchasers in three-year-old multidistrict antitrust litigation pending in Philadelphia. The plaintiffs have already reached settlements with two defendants, including a $25 million deal with Land O’Lakes, and on Monday they beat back motions to dismiss by processed egg behemoth Michael Foods and others.
