After nearly two years of crushing the opposition in courtrooms across Florida, sick and dying smokers suing tobacco companies had reason for pause.

A Miami jury sided in November with Philip Morris USA instead of Maria Espinosa, a Cuban-American woman who smoked for four decades, developed a cancerous tumor in her neck and died in 2003 from complications of radiation therapy.
