Whether seasoned or still gaining our footing, most attorneys write daily. From a junior attorney drafting a memorandum circulated internally to senior counsel preparing a critical appellate brief, quality writing makes all the difference. While legal writing courses provide a foundation for young attorneys, incorporating a few writing techniques and tips along the way can quickly improve the quality of their work product.

The main goal of any writing assignment is to either: present your position persuasively to effectively advance your position with your intended audience; or objectively present relevant facts and case law to educate your audience on a particular topic. As Judge Learned Hand stated, “the language of law must not be foreign to the ears of those who are to obey it.” As advocates for clients and their positions, it is universally important, regardless of practice area, for each of us to communicate effectively, directly, and clearly, especially when the subject is dense or complex.
