Washington continues to discuss nationwide regulations to address overheating that potentially occurs in ion-lithium batteries that power e-bikes and e-scooters. Fortunately, state and local jurisdictions are stepping in to avoid the real possibility of a fire caused by an overheated battery, typically resulting from damage, misuse or inferior quality.

Local efforts to prevent ion-lithium fires in connections with micromobility devices (MMDs) frequently target unsafe batteries, especially when an e-bike or e-scooter has been “renovated” with a potentially subpar replacement battery.
