Without question, opening a solo practice can be both rewarding and demanding. It is also a challenge for those attorneys who have always been supported by a large staff and by others, who do the bookkeeping and who handle other “chores” that are now part of “your job.” As I have said many times, a solo is a managing partner but also a janitor.

Recent news articles have highlighted the dissolution of multiple law firms. Most of the lawyers displaced by these events will join other firms and continue their practices in ways similar to how they have practiced before. But for other lawyers, the dissolution of their firms provides an opportunity, either voluntary or circumstantially, to become solos.
How hard can becoming a solo, or perhaps starting a very small firm, be? Look at all the attorneys who have done it. It must be easy.
