For millions of Americans, a tight rental market has made the search for an apartment an expensive, nerve-wracking ordeal. But problems within the little-known tenant screening industry are only adding to the challenges they face.

Two new reports recently issued by the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describe in clear terms how tenant screening firms used by landlords to vet prospective tenants often produce error-riddled tenant background checks, engage in opaque data collection practices, and, in too many instances, refuse to fix their mistakes.
