For more than 30 years, Sachs has been widely regarded as one of the best appellate attorneys in Pennsylvania. Most recently, her reputation and abilities prompted the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to select her as its counsel, a position in which she will serve as the court’s primary legal adviser and liaison to numerous boards and committees. She is the first woman to serve in this role.

She was an active civil litigator for decades and she represented all manner of clients in both state and federal courts. As manager of one of the largest appellate departments in Pennsylvania, Sachs successfully handled and supervised many multi-million dollar matters. She also argued twice in the U.S. Supreme Court, a career milestone very few attorneys ever achieve.

What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in the profession during your career? The change that technology has made in the pace of practice – in interactions with clients, other lawyers, and the courts. We are a very long way from the days when a letter arrived in the mail, and your response would likewise go out by mail. For anything significant, that would be after you had dictated your response, your secretary had typed a draft, you had reviewed it, your secretary had finalized it on letterhead, and you had reviewed and signed the final version before it was mailed (and not infrequently, you would read your draft letter a day later and think better of it!). Similarly, if a lawyer was involved in a trial, or on vacation, expectations were different – the general understanding was that he or she would respond when they returned to the office.  The capability for constant connectivity via email and cellphones means that all of us have come to expect almost-immediate responses in almost all circumstances.
