The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ordered an inquiry into alleged failures of the First Judicial District’s cash bail system, following a legal challenge that was lodged in March.

In a four-page per curiam order issued Monday, the justices called for an inquiry into allegations of “systemic failures of the First Judicial District to properly conduct cash bail matters pursuant to current law.” The order outlined the process for the inquiry, and appointed McKean County Senior Judge John M. Cleland as special master overseeing the proceedings.
