The biggest surprise in the statewide 2002 Judicial Poll conducted by the State Bar of Texas is the lackluster response to the biennial survey by the state’s legal community. Only 12,405 of the 69,047 ballots mailed to State Bar members were returned, indicating a 17.9 percent response rate, the Bar reported on Feb. 13 when it released results of the poll.

Bar spokeswoman Kimberly Schmitt says this year’s response rate is lower than that for the previous two judicial polls. The response rate for the poll in 2000 was 21 percent, and the 1998 poll had a 23.64 percent response rate, Schmitt says.
