The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission recently approved the $2 billion Elba Liquefaction Project, which will be constructed and operated by Kinder Morgan subsidiaries Elba Liquefaction Co. and Southern LNG Co. The $2 billion project will be constructed and operated at the existing Elba Island LNG Terminal near Savannah, Georgia.

The purpose of the project is to liquefy natural gas so it can be transported in tankers and then regasified into its original state for distribution and sale. As previously announced by Kinder Morgan, the first of 10 liquefaction units is expected to be placed in service in the second quarter of 2018, with the remaining nine units coming online before the end of 2018. This project is supported by a 20-year contract with Shell.
