U.S. Magistrate Jeffrey Cureton of the Northern District of Texas in Fort Worth issued a sanctions order that holds a race-discrimination plaintiff and her attorney as jointly and severally liable for $13,847 in attorney fees and $1,146 in expenses. The sanctions had been requested by the defendant, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, in the case Carter v. Burlington Northern Santa Fe.

With his March 23 ruling, the federal magistrate also rejected the objections to the sanctions filed by the plaintiff and her lawyer, Hiram McBeth, a Dallas solo practitioner.
