A district court has vacated its conviction of a Mexican national who allegedly conspired to bribe U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks in exchange for a reduced sentence on an earlier conviction. The court also accepted the defendant’s motion to withdraw his guilty plea.

The actions by U.S. District Judge Donald Walter followed orders by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. The defendant, Francisco Colorado Cessa, won an appeal in which he argued that Walter erred in denying his motion to withdraw his guilty plea.
