Corporate lawyer Mike Bengtson is the new partner-in-charge in Austin for Baker Botts, succeeding Joe Knight, who plans to leave the firm at the end of the year and open his own firm. Aileen Hooks, who practices environmental law, is now deputy partner-in-charge in Austin. Knight, who had been in charge of the 65-lawyer Austin office since December 2008, said he’s ready to start a “new chapter” after 24 years at Baker Botts. “I’m going to go work for myself for a while and see how it works out,” said Knight, who focuses on litigation and appeals. “It’s just time. It’s always been in the back of my mind. I looked up and I was 49 years old. I’m old enough to afford a little risk and young enough to take a little risk.” Bengtson said Knight did a great job of building momentum in Austin and growing the office, and he wants to continue on that track. Bengtson and Hooks assumed their new roles on Dec. 1.

County Attorney Disbarred

If nothing else, Scott Tidwell will now have plenty of time to run his steak restaurant. That’s because the law career of the former county attorney for Winkler County has come to an end, according to a Nov. 26 order by the Texas Supreme Court that accepts his resignation and cancels his law license. Tidwell was convicted in 2011 of four felonies and two misdemeanors, among them official oppression. Tidwell received a 10-year probated prison sentence. One condition of that probation was that he spend 120 days in jail—a condition that was changed in July to allow him to leave the lockup in order to manage his steak restaurant [See "Convicted Former County Attorney Gets Work Release to Run His Steak Restaurant," Texas Lawyer, July 28, 2014.] “The court further concludes that acceptance of the resignation of Scott M. Tidwell is in the best interest of the public and the profession,” according to the high court’s order. “Scott M. Tidwell must immediately surrender his state bar card and Texas law license to the clerk of the Supreme Court of Texas or file with the court an affidavit stating why he cannot.”
