Jury sides with student whose scholarship was terminated

On July 22, a former Southern Methodist University basketball player was awarded $19,213 on her claim that the school dropped her scholarship because of a complaint memo aimed at the coach. In 2006, Jennifer Colli sent a letter to the athletic director stating that coach Rhonda Rompola didn’t approve of romantic relationships on the team. Colli was in a relationship with a teammate. Another complaint in the memo was that some players would come to practice smelling of marijuana. Her sholarship was terminated her sophomore year on the grounds that the memo wasn’t credible and Colli had committed dishonesty and harassment of the coaching staff. Colli claimed that SMU violated its own compliance manual and student handbook and the NCAA bylaws.
