Note: This chart depicts the number of law students who were second-year summer associates at large firms in Texas during the summers of 2009 and 2008, the number of permanent job offers extended to those summer associates and the number of those summer associates who accepted permanent positions in the firms’ Texas offices. The 17 firms on the chart are among the 26 largest in Texas as reported on Texas Lawyer’s “The Texas 100″ poster, published on April 27, 2009. Five of the 26 largest firms in Texas decline to provide information: Baker Botts; Baker & McKenzie; Gardere Wynne Sewell; K&L Gates; and King & Spalding. Brown McCarroll does not conduct a summer associate program and Winstead canceled its program in 2009. Clark, Thomas & Winters and Greenberg Traurig made no permanent offers to their 2009 Texas summer associates. The numbers on the chart include only summer associates in the firms Texas offices. Summer associates at several firms accepted judicial clerkships and therefore are not allowed to accept permanent job offers until after their clerkships end. The firms and the number of judicial clerks are: Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld (1); Andrews Kurth (1); Bracewell & Giuliani (1); Fulbright & Jaworski (3); Jones Day (1); Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell (1); Patton Boggs (1); and Vinson & Elkins (5).
