On Aug. 21, a jury awarded $1,222,491 to a leverman who sustained back injuries while working aboard a dredge on the Mississippi River. On Nov. 1, 2005, Roger Hamilton slipped and fell on the bottom step of a ladder on the outside of the vessel owned by Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Co. Hamilton claimed he sustained herniated disks at L3-4 and L4-5. He underwent a diskectomy and fusion surgery but said he still experiences chronic pain. He also said the injuries forced him to stop working in 2007. He sued Great Lakes, alleging negligence. He claimed the bottom step of the ladder was different from the others and contended that a nonskid abrasive should’ve been added to its paint to prevent slipping. The defense argued the incident didn’t cause Hamilton’s injuries.
