On July 2, a jury found that gender and age weren’t factors in an airline’s decision to terminate a station agent’s employment. Debra Rodriguez was fired from her job at American Eagle Airlines in 2007, at the age of 41, after she intentionally entered an incorrect baggage count into the company’s weight and balance system. Her replacement was male. Rodriguez sued the airline for age and gender discrimination, alleging that a younger employee had done the same thing as she did and was not fired. She also said that she had previously complained of a female co-worker harassing her and that the termination was partly in retaliation for that. Rodriguez sought $142,000 in damages. The airline denied the allegations and argued that Rodriguez was fired solely for violating company rules.
