The Houston Community College System prevailed at the U.S. Supreme Court in a First Amendment case involving a litigious trustee who sued over a censure resolution.

The unanimous decision in Houston Community College System v. Wilson, authored by Justice Neil Gorsuch, held that a purely verbal censure did not violate the free speech of an elected official because there was no adverse action. Trustee David Wilson has had a contentious relationship with his colleagues for years, which ultimately resulted in the censure in 2018.
