A federal judge in Brownsville sentenced an attorney from Weslaco to 30 months in federal prison and three years supervised release for bribing immigration detention officers in order to obtain documents on detained migrants.

U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez handed out the sentence Tuesday to Roel Alanis, a solo practitioner who pleaded guilty in April 2021. Alanis resigned his license with the State Bar of Texas in lieu of disciplinary action.
