Two Republican candidates, Ysmael Fonseca and Aaron Pena, are facing off in the primary to determine which one will challenge the Democratic incumbent, Justice Leticia Hinojosa, for Texas’ Thirteenth District Court of Appeals, Place 3.

Fonseca, a University of Notre Dame graduate, has been in the conservative movement since college, serving on the Grassroots Development Team of the Republican National Committee in 2002. A member of the Catholic student group and pro-life student group in law school, he helped stage a counter-commencement in 2009 to protest Notre Dame’s decision to confer an honorary law degree on President Barack Obama.
