After a surprise Feb. 9 announcement that the dramatic and highly publicized trade secret saga of Waymo v. Uber has come to an unexpected end, one man left the courtroom beaming—Uber’s recently minted chief legal officer, Tony West.

And he has good reason to smile. Business Insider reports West whittled down Uber Technologies Inc.’s settlement to an equity payout of just under $250 million and a promise not to use Waymo trade secrets, down from the $500 million Google reportedly asked for earlier last week. But that’s a success West won’t confirm himself.
