A Newark woman who was dragged by a New Jersey Transit bus after her arm became caught in a closing door received an $800,000 settlement in her Essex County suit, Opoku v. New Jersey Transit, on Nov. 5.

Darling Opoku was in a line of passengers boarding a New Jersey Transit bus on Springfield Avenue in Irvington on Jan. 3, 2011, when the driver closed the entrance door of the bus and pulled away—as she grasped the handrail but before she stepped in, according to plaintiff lawyer Andrew Statmore of Fredson & Statmore in Clifton. Opoku was dragged about 10 feet before a passenger alerted the driver, Statmore said.
