It’s been almost 7 1/2 years since an 18-year-old Fresno, Calif., man, months shy of his high school graduation, died.

When he died, the young man’s lungs were donated to a woman on the verge of death, saving her life. The man’s sacrifice is the reason that Isabel Stenzel Byrnes, the wife of Covington & Burling partner Andrew Byrnes, is still alive today. Isabel and her twin sister Anabel were born with cystic fibrosis. Together, they’re now helping others in need of organ transplants.
