The so-called “firefighter rule” cannot be used to bar a personal injury lawsuit filed by a New York City police officer who tripped over a paper shredder’s power cord that had been extended across her office floor, a Brooklyn appeals court ruled.

According to a decision by the Appellate Division, Second Department, in Kelly v. City of New York, 9335/10, Maryellyn Kelly had been assigned to a New York City Police Department medical unit housed in Queens when the injury allegedly occurred.
