Professional employer organizations, entities being tapped by mid-size and smaller firms to lower the cost of employee benefits and human resource functions, are the subject of a recent ethics opinion by the New York City Bar Association.

Professional employer organizations, or PEOs, can provide employee benefits at lower costs by “co-employing” a company’s employees, who are pooled with workers from other companies, at times allowing an organization to provide a package of benefits it otherwise would not be able to offer.
