If the sentencing last week of Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) teaches general counsel anything, it is that failing to cooperate fully with federal prosecutors is risky business. The prosecutors asked for, and received, some harsh penalties.

The criminal case stemmed from the 2010 gas pipeline explosion that left eight people dead and 58 injured. The resulting fire also destroyed 38 homes and damaged 70 others, with victim losses set at around $565 million.
